Metta Theatre

"Formed in 2003, Metta Theatre operates a small black box theatre where they offer free acting and playwriting training, as well as producing plays."

Metta Theatre began as Metta Projects in 1996, offering acting classes and producing plays in Taos. Founder Bruce McIntosh began volunteering at Taos High School drama classes in 2005, and after so enjoying meeting and working with the students there, began focusing on work with area youth. Metta Theatre became a 501(c)3 non profit organization in 2006, offering twice weekly acting workshops at no charge, and stepping up the production schedule. Later that year Metta leased a raw space and built a 36 black box theatre in El Prado, where it still is based. We’ve offered classes in drama and creative writing for free at Taos Middle School, Taos High School, Taos Charter School, Chrysalis School, Vista Grande High School, Casa de Corazon (residential treatment center for young women), and Girl Time (an after school program for high school students). In addition, offered classes at the Taos County Juvenile Detention Center for three and a half years, until its recent closing.

Currently travel to Albuquerque twice monthly and teach at YDDC, a facility for teenaged juvenile detention inmates run by NM CYFD (Children, Youth, & Families Department). We also have coached a number of local students for auditions to college theatre programs and admission to NMSA in Santa Fe. Finally, we are working to prepare students for professional auditions in NM film and TV work, running free workshops, taping “demo” scenes and referring them to casting directors and talent agents with the intention of helping them secure agency representation, paid work, and union membership.
