Friends of the Taos Public Library
"The Friends of the Taos Public Library is an essential community asset that provides reading opportunities and access for all residents of Taos County."
The Friends of Taos Library, a nonprofit 501(c)(3), supports the library through fundraising, developing the library collection, maintaining the library’s used book store, and publishing a quarterly newsletter.
Friends of Taos Library was founded in 1979. This organization is dedicated to the advocacy of the Taos Public Library by supporting Library programs and cooperating with Library staff to enhance facilities, resources and services for the public.
Since 1991, the Friends have raised more than $3 million dollars and provided thousands of volunteer hours annually for Taos Public Library facilities, programs, staff education, and services.
The first library in Taos was located in the Harwood House, now the site of the Harwood Art Museum. In 1991 determined community members launched the Friends of the Taos Public Library to raise funds to build the current building. The Friends and generous donors raised more than $2 million dollars for construction, and shelves and furniture for this library. We also received many valuable art pieces to adorn the walls. Since then, the Friends provide funds for library acquisitions (books, periodicals and special collections), equipment, staff trainings and special events.
